CBIS - air sampler for isotopes aboard the CASA 212 AR
Measurement campaign VERDRILLT
Under the leadership of the Institute for Environmental Physics (IUP) of the
University of Bremen, the Aircraft-bound field campaign VERDRILLT (VERtical Distribution of Radicals In the Lower Layers of the Troposphere) took place from 23 to 28 August 2010 in Spain. Further participants in the measurement campaign, alongside the Bergische Universität Wuppertal, were the Institute for Physics of the Atmosphere of the German Aerospace Center (DLR) as well as from Spain the Centro de Estudios Ambientales del Mediterráneo (CEAM), the Universidad del Pais Vasco (UPV-EHU , University of the Basque Country) and the Instituto Nacional de Técnica Aeroespacial (INTA). Base station was the airport near the INTA, which also provided the CASA C-212-200 as measuring aircraft.
Scientific background
The intention of the project was to study the importance of vegetation on the distribution of oxidants in the lower troposphere, in particular the vertical distribution of peroxy radicals under the influence of organic biogenic and anthropogenic emissions. For this purpose, the measuring area offers very good conditions with urban conurbations and adjoining extensive rural areas (including Valderejo Natural Park) as well as summer meteorology in Spain, photochemistry and near-ground convection in higher atmospheric layers. In order to investigate anthropogenic and biogenic source regions and emissions and their transport of precursors of peroxy radicals, the flight routes were selected along the horizontal transport routes of pollutants near the coast (Cirat) to the midland and from Madrid to the Valderejo Nature Park.
The measurements were aimed at the investigation of the extent of convective processes as well as the photochemical processing of air pollutants in the middle and lower troposphere. For this purpose, the ZEBIS experiment (Link) was modified in June 2010 for installation in a smaller rack (F20 rack) in order to integrate it into the CASA 212 AR during the campaign VERDRILLT. The conversion mainly required slight modifications of the mechanical components. The CBIS (CASA based isotope sampler) was the result of the other racks, the resulting modifications and the other flight platform.
