ZEBIS - air sampler for isotopes aboard the Zeppelin NT
Zeppelin NT
In close collaboration with the Institute for Chemistry and Dynamics of the Atmosphere 2: Troposphere of the Research Centre Jülich (ICG-2) the Zeppelin NT of Zeppelin Luftschifftechnik GmbH & Co. KG (ZLT) is available as a novel platform for chemical and physical observations in field campaigns within the PBL. The Zeppelin NT provides an ideal basis for measurements in this atmospheric region which is favorable to other airborne platforms. Up to 1 ton of scientific payload can be carried. Beneath a horizontal range of 1000 km, a climb altitude of 20-3000 m a.s.l. and a maximal flight duration of 20 hours the Zeppelin NT is highly maneuverable due to a directed thrust actuation. The maximum climb and sink rate is about 5-6 m/s. Moreover, the flight velocity reaches from 0 to 115 km/h. The Zeppelin NT can perform defined flight profiles but also drift with the surrounding air.
The Zeppelin NT is available as a platform for measurements in the PBL for the next years. This platform provides a high potential to contain the data gaps in this atmospheric region and thus to the understanding of chemical processes, redistribution and transport of pollutants from their source region into the atmosphere.
